Comments for the week ending August 4, 2022:
It was a fairly quiet week this week with just 140 fed steers and heifers sold
through auction markets, down 216 from last week and 131 fewer than the
same time last year. 62 fed steers sold from $164.52-$187.10 averaging
$178.38 down $0.33 from the previous week but $26.02 above year ago
prices. 78 fed heifers sold this week from $162.24-$186.97 averaging
$177.38 up $5.83 on average from the week before and $28.05 stronger
than this time last year. Auction markets reported light runs with prices steady
with quality considered, with one market noting steers up $4.00-$5.00 cwt.
The Ontario railgrade market was also very light this week with prices fully
steady to last week at $306.00 dressed for steers and $305.00 for heifers
with a few at $306.00. The cattle sold early in this reporting period were
scheduled for the weeks of August 22nd and 29th delivery, but as the week
progressed sales were noted for the last week in August delivery and the
week of September 5th. This weeks average price is up $48.00 cwt from the
same time last year.
Fed/cull cow volumes were down by 232 head from the previous week at
1,536, which is also 470 less than the same week one year ago. Cows sold
from $84.54-$121.24 averaging $100.65 cwt up $2.59 from last week and
$23.74 stronger than year ago pricing. Auction markets reported good cows
steady to stronger with beef cows steady to $3.00 cwt higher by weeks end.
Dairy breeds were noted as steady to start the week but higher by weeks
end. Plainer cows sold at easier prices. Beef cow volumes were lighter this
week by around 80 head, averaging $112.61 cwt, up $3.06 from last weeks
weighted average beef cow price.
The stocker and feeder cattle market also saw very light volumes this week
with just 1,992 head sold through auction markets, down 592 from last week
and 85 fewer than last year at this time. Auction markets reported calves as
active with prices steady to stronger and sharply higher by the end of the
week. Yearlings/heavier cattle were steady with quality considered to start out
the week, but by Tuesday good quality cattle were up $5.00-$8.00 cwt. By
mid-week heavier cattle were reported as easier but ended the week firm to
stronger. Grass types sold on a steady market. Overall average prices for
the week saw steers 400-500 lbs up $15.20 from last week on average, 500-
600 lbs up $6.83, 600-700 lbs down $8.35, 700-800 lbs up $10.78, 800-900
lbs up $3.08, 900-1000 lbs up $7.22 and steers 1000 lbs plus averaged
$3.05 easier than last weeks trade. Heifers from 400-500 lbs were up
$13.87, 500-600 lbs down $4.40, 600-700 lbs up $5.85, 700-800 lbs up
$2.29, 800-900 lbs up $8.92 and heifers 900 lbs and over averaged $8.58
higher than last weeks weighted average prices. Compared to one year ago
all weight categories are averaging $19.00-$50.00 cwt stronger.
The Quebec electronic market reported for this week saw sales range from
$300.00-$301.00 dressed on a picked-up basis, down $1.33 cwt from the
previous week on average.
Alberta direct trade on Wednesday was reported as light by Canfax with
prices up $1.00-$3.00 cwt from last week at $295.00-$297.00 delivered on a
dressed basis on a smaller offering this week. Thursday, trade continued at
$296.00-$297.00 delivered on a dressed basis. Canfax reports: Lift dates
are staring to tighten up, cattle that were bought this week were being
scheduled for late August/early September delivery. Tentatively fed cattle
prices did set new annual highs this week, it is very rare that annual highs
are established during the third quarter.
The U.S. cash cattle trade the week ending July 29th was softer than the
previous week with the north continuing at a premium to the south. Trade in
Texas was mainly $135.00 live, down $1.00 on average, while Kansas was
from $135.00-$137.00, mainly $135.00-$136.00. In Nebraska live trade
ranged from $138.00-$141.00 while Iowa saw live sales from $141.00-
$145.00. Dressed deals in the north ranged from $224.00-$230.00. Overall
average prices for the week reported by the USDA Mandatory Price Report
saw live steers average $139.83 down $1.29 from the previous week while
live heifers averaged $137.80 down $0.60. On the rail steers averaged
$225.53 dressed down $2.06 from the week before while heifers averaged
$225.32 down $1.54.
The U.S. cash cattle trade this week reported smaller show lists in all feeding
states, with Kansas reporting the largest decrease in volume over last week.
On Tuesday a light test surfaced in all feeding states at steady prices.
Business in the south was mainly $135.00 live which is fully steady to $1.00
lower, while northern deals ranged from $141.00-$143.00 on a live basis
which is steady to slightly stronger and $225.00 dressed which is steady.
Wednesday, was light to moderate with trade in the south from $135.00-
$136.00 live, with the $136.00 in Kansas, which is steady to last week. In the
north trade ranged from $140.00-$144.00 live up $1.00-$2.00 from last week
with dressed trade starting at $225.00, but improving to $228.00-$232.00 as
the day progressed, up $2.00 cwt. Thursday, trade was light in the south
with prices up $1.00 from early week trade at $136.00 live in Texas and
$136.00-$138.00 live in Kansas. In the north stronger prices on Thursday
saw live sales range from $142.00-$147.00 with dressed deals from $226.00-
$232.00, mainly $227.00-$228.00 up $2.00-$3.00 cwt. A few clean up deals
are possible today but at this point it appears the bulk of trade has been
completed.
