ONT Farm Market News PM Livestock Summary for August 19 Here is the Country Auction Report as collected by the Beef Farmers of Ontario Friday. * REPLACEMENT CATTLE: There were 800 head on offer at Brussels. Calves and yearlings sold on a strong, active trade at higher prices. D.W. *Compared to the previous day this was down $0.28 *Average weekly price /ckg DW total value $309.84 *Total volume of Ont. hogs sold was 101201 * From the Beef Farmers of Ontario, the weekly beef commentary: Comments for the week ending August 18, 2022: Light receipts of 202 fed steers and heifers sold through auction markets this week down 126 head from last week and 65 fewer than last year at this time. Fed steers ranged from $173.41-$189.53 averaging $182.94 up $1.44 from last weeks weighted average price and $31.20 above this time last year. Fed heifers traded from $162.70-$186.72 averaging $175.14 up $1.47 from the previous week and $31.45 stronger than year ago prices. Auction markets reported trade as steady to fully steady with one market noting heifers as higher. The Ontario railgrade market was extremely quiet again this week with no bids or new trade reported. The fed/cull cow market this week was up 54 head from the previous week at 1,834 head, but 174 fewer than the same time last year. As of July 31, 2022, the volume of cows sold through auction markets totals 65,710 head down 7.4% from July 31, 2021 and 11.8% below 2020 volumes. Beef cow volumes sold total 16,481 head, up 20.6% from 2021 and 25.1% above July 31, 2020. Dairy cow volumes as of July 31, 2022 are at 49,229 head down 14% from 2021 and 19.7% below July 31, 2020. Cows this week ranged from $79.79- $124.43 averaging $100.09 up $1.07 from the week before and $22.89 above year ago prices. Auction markets reported trade as steady to slightly easier on good quality cows, with beef cows noted as stronger by weeks end. Plainer types were reported as easier. By the end of the week the beef cows were steady to stronger and dairy cows were holding steady. 135 more beef cows sold this week at 497 head averaging $110.64 down $1.00 from last weeks weighted average beef cow price. There were 2,947 stocker and feeder cattle sold through auction markets this week up 519 head from last week and 514 more than the same time last year. Auction markets reported trade as active to start the week with prices steady to the previous week, with grass cattle at a premium. Tuesday and Wednesday saw the heavier cattle trading on a strong demand at higher prices, up $5.00-$8.00 cwt. Light weight cattle were reported as $5.00- $10.00 cwt higher by Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday saw heavy cattle trading at higher prices with light heifer calves also stronger. Heavy heifer calves and steer calves ended the week fully steady. Actual average prices this week saw steers 400-500 lbs up $29.68 from the week before on average, 500-600 lbs up $8.82, 600-700 lbs down $10.61, 700-800 lbs up $7.52, 800-900 lbs up $12.50, 900-1000 lbs up $8.67 and steers 1000 lbs and over averaged $9.16 stronger than last week. Heifers from 400-500 lbs were up $39.02 from last week, 500-600 lbs up $6.23, 600-700 lbs up $15.56, 700-800 lbs down $13.25, 800-900 lbs down $1.10 and heifers 900 lbs and over averaged $2.46 easier than last weeks weighted average prices. Alberta direct trade was slightly stronger this week from $298.00-$300.00 cwt delivered on a dressed basis, up $2.00 cwt from last weeks sales. Canfax reports: Cattle that traded were being scheduled for mid-September delivery. Premiums were noted if cattle graded over 70% AAA. Alberta and Ontario fed prices have been moving in opposite directions as of late. Alberta fed prices are trading almost par with the Ontario market. Alberta fed basis levels did weaken this week. Packers did not buy a lot of cattle and sale volumes are shaping up very light. The U.S. cash cattle trade the week ending August 12th was moderate to active at higher prices. Sales in the south ranged from $138.00-$140.00 live, mainly $140.00 up $3.00-$4.00 cwt. Business in the north ranged from $142.00-$149.00 live, mostly $146.00 with dressed deals from $228.00- $235.00, mostly $229.00-$230.00 up $2.00-$3.00 cwt. Overall average prices for the week released by the USDA Mandatory Price Report saw live steers averaged $144.39 up $3.55 and live heifers $143.70 up $5.51 cwt. On the rail dressed trade averaged $229.93 for steers up $2.10 and heifers $229.86 up $2.06 from the previous week on average. This week the U.S. cash cattle trade was quiet Monday and Tuesday with just couple of deals reported at steady to slightly stronger prices but not enough sold to establish a market, as sellers dug in their heels for higher prices and were successful. Wednesday business in the south was mainly $141.00 live up $1.00 cwt from last weeks southern trade. In the north business ranged from $148.00-$151.00 live, mainly $148.00 up $2.00, with dressed deals from $230.00-$238.00, mainly $233.00-$234.00 up around $3.00-$4.00 cwt from last week on average. Thursday, trade was light to moderate with prices steady to stronger than Wednesday. Business in the south was mainly $142.00 live up $2.00 cwt from last week with a few in Kansas reported at $143.00. Trade in the north had a wide range of $146.00-$153.00 live, mainly $148.00-$150.00 up $2.00-$4.00 while dressed deals ranged from $231.00-$237.00, mostly $234.00 up $4.00 cwt.
