ONT Farm Market News PM Livestock Summary for July 22 Here is the Country Auction Report as collected by the Beef Farmers of Ontario Friday. * REPLACEMENT CATTLE: There were 1,050 head on offer at Brussels. Calves and yearlings sold on a strong, active trade at higher prices. D.W. *Compared to the previous day this was up $1.42 *Average weekly price /ckg DW total value $287.9 *Total volume of Ont. hogs sold was 99197 * From the Beef Farmers of Ontario, the weekly beef commentary: Comments for the week ending July 21, 2022 : 395 fed steers and heifers sold through auction markets this week, 80 more than last week and 85 more than this time last year. Fed steers ranged from $174.25-$191.47, with a weekly weighted average price of $185.58, down $1.48 from last week and $28.59 stronger than year ago prices. Fed heifers ranged from $168.85-$186.71, averaging $180.01 cwt, down $5.73 from the previous week but still $27.73 above this time last year. Auction markets reported trade as just steady to fully steady to last weeks trade early in the week. Towards the end of the week one market reported $2.00 lower. The Ontario railgrade market was light this week with a few sales mid week at $313.00 dressed for steers which is down $2.00 from the previous weeks trade. Heifers traded at $312.00 with both steers and heifers being delivered the week of August 15th. This weeks prices are easier than last week. Last year at this time volumes sold were limited at $260.00 dressed for steers and $259.50 dressed for heifers. 2,174 fed/cull cows sold through auction markets this week up 15 head from last week, and 498 more than the same week last year. Cows traded from $88.70-$122.65 averaging $104.24 down $1.33 cwt compared to the previous week but $23.02 stronger than year ago prices. Auction markets reported trade as all classes selling steady with cull cows selling easier. Towards the end of the week, they were selling actively at firm prices. 1,836 stocker and feeder cattle sold through auction market this week down 316 head from the week before and 358 less than the same time last year. Auction markets reported trade as calves and yearlings selling steady. Other markets reported trade as steady to stronger with all classes and some selling $3.00 - $5.00 higher than last week with good buyer interest. Actual average prices this week saw steers 400-500 lbs down $2.81 from the previous week on average, 500-600 lbs up $1.76, 600-700 lbs up $0.76, 700-800 lbs up $15.61, 800-900 lbs down $6.70, and steers 900 lbs plus averaged $10.47 stronger than last weeks weighted average prices. Heifers from 300-400 lbs sold at a weekly weighted average price of $187.62 and there was no trade last week in this weight category to compare to. Heifers 400-500 lbs down $13.04, 500-600 lbs up $20.13, 600-700 lbs up $14.55, 700-800 lbs up $19.69, and heifers 800 lbs and over were down $3.30 compared to last week on average. All classes continue to trade above year ago prices. The Quebec electronic market this week reported prices at $305.00 cwt dressed on a picked-up basis, down $2.00 cwt from the previous week on average. Alberta direct trade was slow to start this week. Wednesday light trade developed with prices steady to $1.00 cwt lower than the previous week with dressed deals at $292.00-$293.00 delivered. Delivery was reported anywhere from the week of August 1 to August 29th. The U.S. cash cattle trade was light early in the week. Texas saw live prices at $136.00 which were steady to $1.00 lower than last week. The hot weather requires handling cattle very carefully and it is less than ideal conditions.
