ONT Farm Market News PM Livestock Summary for March 25 Here is the Country Auction Report as collected by the Beef Farmers of Ontario Friday. * REPLACEMENT CATTLE: There were 1,325 head on offer at Brussels. Calves sold steady. Yearlings sold on an easier market. D.W. *Compared to the previous day this was up $1.03 *Average weekly price /ckg DW total value $254.55 *Total volume of Ont. hogs sold was 109146 * From the Beef Farmers of Ontario, the weekly beef commentary: Comments for the week ending March 24, 2022: Larger receipts of 485 fed steers and heifers sold through auction markets this week, up 95 head from last week but 51 fewer than last year at this time. Fed steers ranged from $165.10-$177.26, averaging $172.08, up $1.53 from last week and $31.78 above year ago prices. Heifers ranged from $163.16- $174.69, averaging $170.16, up $1.78 from last week and $30.72 above year ago prices. Auction markets reported a good demand with prices fully steady and continuing at strong prices. The Ontario railgrade market was fully steady again this week with delivery starting out the week of April 4th and out to the week of April 11th by Tuesday. Steers sold at $290.00 dressed for majority of the cattle with just a couple of deals at $293.00 for immediate delivery. Heifers ranged from $289.00-$290.00 dressed. This weeks average price is $50.00 cwt stronger than this time last year. 2,265 fed/cull cows sold through auction markets this week, up 90 head from last week but 180 fewer than the same week last year. Cows sold from $79.98-$110.22 averaging $94.30 up $0.27 cwt from the previous week and $24.08 above year ago prices. Auction markets reported trade as active with prices steady to slightly stronger, with one market noting prices up $5.00 cwt in spots. Beef cows this week averaged $101.48 with 86 more head sold than last week, averaging $2.79 higher than last weeks weighted average price for beef cows. There were 4,543 head of stocker and feeder cattle sold through auction markets this week up 527 head from last week but 426 fewer than the same time last year. Auction markets reported calves as steady to $5.00-$10.00 cwt higher to start with quality considered and steady to slightly stronger as the week progressed, again with quality considered. Grass types were noted as steady to strong with fleshy and plainer types steady. Yearlings were steady until Wednesday where they were reported as under pressure and Thursday held steady. Actual average prices this week saw steers 400-500 lbs down $0.47, 500-600 lbs up $9.29, 600-700 lbs up $8.44, 700-800 lbs down $2.08, 800-900 lbs down $5.35, 900-1000 lbs down $7.07 and steers 1000 lbs plus averaged $10.26 easier than last weeks weighted averages. Heifers from 300-400 lbs were down $0.47 on very light receipts, 400-500 lbs up $10.10, 500-600 lbs up $11.87, 600-700 lbs up $10.83, 700-800 lbs up $13.12, 800-900 lbs up $9.70 while heifers 900 lbs and over averaged $4.29 easier than last week. The Quebec electronic market this week was reported at $294.25 cwt on a picked-up basis, down $3.88 from last week on average. Alberta direct trade was extremely light on Wednesday with prices fully steady to last week at $275.00 delivered on a dressed basis however there was not enough to establish a price report. A couple of live sales were reported at $161.50 cwt, also steady. Canfax reports: The general market tone was steady but total weekly sale volumes this week will be limited. The U.S. cash cattle trade for the week ending March 18th was active on Wednesday and Thursday with just some clean up deals reported on Friday. Business in the south was fully steady while the north was up $1.00-$2.00 cwt. Sales in the south were mainly $138.00 live while the north saw prices from $138.00-$140.00 live and $219.00-$225.00 dressed, mainly $221.00- $222.00. Overall average prices for the week posted by the USDA Mandatory Price Report saw live steers averaging $139.10 up $0.80 from last week with heifers averaging $138.48 up $0.34. On the rail steers averaged $221.68 up $1.57 with heifers at $221.42 up $1.46. This week the U.S. cash cattle trade saw light to moderate trade develop on Wednesday with prices holding steady in the south from $135.00-$138.00 live, mainly $138.00. In the north trade was reported $219.00-$225.00 dressed, mainly $221.00 which is steady to around $0.50 easier, with some live trade from $138.00-$143.00, majority at $140.00. Thursday saw some scattered trade at prices steady to Wednesday. Other than a few clean up deals today it appears the bulk of trade is completed ahead of the Cattle On Feed Report at 3:00 pm Friday afternoon.
